The Free State of the Three Leagues – Successes and Challenges

The Covenant Charter of 23 September 1524 testified to the unification of the three leagues: the Covenant of the House of God, the Upper League and the League of Ten Judges. The resulting Free State had to survive several crises, especially during the Grisons turmoil in the first third of the 17th century. Sectarian division and party strife, social inequality and dependence on foreign countries were the factors that challenged the republic.
