Weather and Climate
The alpine but sunny climate makes Chur a place with particularly pleasant weather all year round.
The city enjoys around 2,300 hours of sunshine per year – significantly more than many other regions in Switzerland. With an average of 852 mm of precipitation per year, Chur lies in the rain shadow of the Alps and therefore remains comparatively dry.
Spring
Temperatures rise rapidly in spring. March is still cool, but by May the daily highs are already around 17 to 18 °C.
Summer
Summer is warm and sunny – in July, temperatures average 25 °C, and can be even higher on hot days. Despite occasional summer thunderstorms, the climate remains pleasant and the air is mostly dry.
Autumn
In autumn, Chur shows its golden side: mild days up to around 20 °C in September, followed by cooler evenings and clear mountain air.
Winter
Winters are cool but often bright. Temperatures usually hover around freezing, and snowfall is possible but rarely stays on the ground for long in the valley. The Föhn wind regularly brings mild, dry spells in the middle of winter.
Thanks to its sheltered location, Chur is rarely foggy even in the colder months – only about 6 to 7 days a year.
