Sights and Attractions

The historic Old Town is well worth a visit and completely car-free. It offers a wide range of cultural activities, shopping, cafés, restaurants and bars.

The Bishop's Court with its 800-year-old Cathedral, one of the most important cultural monuments in Switzerland, towers over the old town.

The Arcas is a picturesque square in the Old Town of Chur. The ensemble of medieval rows of houses and the modern open space in between give it its special ambience.

The Obertor is a listed city gate which, together with the Malteser Tower and the Sennhof Tower, is one of the remaining tower buildings of the medieval city fortifications.

This church rises high above the roofs of the Old Town. It was the centre and starting point of the Reformation in Chur. The famous stained glass windows by Augusto Giacometti were installed in 1919.

The Roman campaign of conquest a good 2000 years ago is an important part of Chur's settlement history. Finds are presented in the protective building by star architect Peter Zumthor.

In his hometown, H.R. Giger, Oscar winner and creator of the «Aliens» of the famous movie, has opened his bar. Skeletal chairs and eerie sculptures are out of this world.

The history of Chur goes back a long way. The first traces of settlement date back to 11,000 BC.
