Chur as gateway for winter sports experiences
With a settlement history of over 5000 years, Chur is the oldest town in Switzerland. Particularly worth seeing are the bishop's castle, the three-aisled cathedral and the well-preserved buildings in the old town. You can learn a lot of interesting facts about the history and culture of the Alpine City on a guided city tour or individually with the City E-Guide. Or in the three cantonal museums of Graubünden, all of which are located in the city centre and offer an exciting insight into the art, history and nature of Graubünden. The car-free old town and the winding alleys invite you to take a leisurely shopping trip. Connoisseurs appreciate the numerous restaurants, where regional specialities from Graubünden such as capuns, maluns or pizokel are very popular.
Of course, in addition to gastronomy and shopping, the city also offers a number of leisure facilities, such as the Quader outdoor ice rink in the city centre or a large climbing centre.
Stay in one of the most centrally located hotels in Graubünden and use the Alpine City as an ideal starting point. From cosy and inexpensive guesthouses to upscale city hotels; you are sure to find suitable accommodation here. View & book hotels now.
Chur is also the starting point for rail travel with the Rhaetian Railway and its world-famous panoramic trains Bernina and Glacier Express. Whether it's the surrounding resort towns such as Davos-Klosters, St. Moritz and Bad Ragaz, or sports and leisure destinations such as Arosa, Lenzerheide and Flims-Laax, the neighbours can all be easily reached by train and post bus directly from the city on the Rhine as a day trip. With the railaway offers, guests can combine panoramic journeys through the winter landscape of Graubünden with a stay in the Alpine City of Chur - and benefit from attractive package deals.
With the local mountain Brambrüesch, Chur is the only city in Switzerland to have its own winter sports area, which is directly accessible from the city centre by cableway. In addition to 20 kilometres of natural snow slopes, there is a 5-kilometre-long toboggan run and great opportunities for winter hiking and snowshoeing - and of course, cosy mountain inns are not to be missed. Practical: The AIS sports school offers ski and snowboard courses as well as guided snowshoe tours directly in the area and equipment rental is also possible directly at the Brambrüesch location.
The Snowshoe Arena Dreibündenstein connects the three areas of Brambrüesch, Feldis and Pradaschier around the Dreibündenstein plateau. A signposted snowshoe route leads from each of the stations to the plateau, making unique round trips possible. Round trip tickets include not only lifts but also the return journey by public transport, and flexible snowshoe and crossblade hire is available directly on site (hire at the starting point / return at the destination). Chur and the local mountain Brambrüesch are the ideal entry point to the Snowshoe Arena, for which there is also an official snowshoe map.
Since 2014, 2 ski areas with Arosa-Lenzerheide have become 1 winter paradise with over 40 state-of-the-art transport facilities and 225 kilometres of pistes. Chur is located right in the middle of the winter sports area and is the ideal starting point for exploring Arosa-Lenzerheide. The snow pass is also valid as a 2nd class public transport ticket from Chur to Lenzerheide and from Chur to Arosa (and back) when practising winter sports. The tickets for Arosa-Lenzerheide can be purchased at the Regional Info Centre at Chur railway station - so you can benefit from «public transport included» as soon as you arrive in the ski area. Also a special experience, but away from the ski slopes: the winter hiking trail Heidi & Gigi from Arosa to Lenzerheide, including arrival and return journey from Chur.
The freestyle mecca of Flims-Laax is also only 20 minutes away from Chur and can be easily reached by public transport and car.
With Tschiertschen and Feldis, there are also two charming mountain villages with small but fine winter sports areas in the immediate vicinity of the Alpine City. A visit to these two Graubünden gems has its very own charm.
On world-famous rail tracks to pure excitement on wooden runners: This is what the Preda - Bergün tobogganing adventure of the Rhaetian Railway has to offer. A great excursion from Chur, even in the evening, because the toboggan run is illuminated. With the Toboggan Combi you can enjoy as many rides as you like on the toboggan run for a whole day and the return journey is also included.
