Archaeology: Roman excavations

In Welschdörfli, the part of the old town lying south of the river Plessur, researchers found several prehistoric settlements and the remains of a Roman Street Station. The Roman conquest some 2000 years ago is an important part of Chur's settlement history. Excavations and relicts from that era are exhibited in the Areal Ackermann on Seilerbahnweg.

The protective structures covering the archaeological sites from the Roman era were built in 1986 according to designs by local architect Peter Zumthor. They do not only protect the finds, they are also a museum and architectural masterpiece. The weighty building with its delicate rilled outer surface is reminiscent of the original Roman edifices.
