Town Square Chur
Hegisplatz
A cozy place in the old town of Chur.
Description
Hegis square is lined with several historical buildings: Hegishaus is said to have been occupied as early as the 16th and 17th century by the Zurich family Hegi, after whom the square is named. The Schuhmacher guild house with its tower from 1510 and a late Gothic entrance door. The Square was originally named New Tower Square after it. The red house was purchased, refurbished and extended by an enclosed baroque garden by Commissari Rudolph von Salis in 1637. The "Haus zum Meerhafen" or "Sea Harbour House" with its box-shaped wooden structured dates from the time immediately after the fire of Chur in 1464. It's unclear how the house got its name.
