Description
The upper road, on the other hand, leads via Lenzerheide and Tiefencastel to the Albula, Julier and Septimer passes. If you take the upper road, you will pass the church and the crenellated abbey of a former monastery in Churwalden, which was founded in the High Middle Ages, probably by the then powerful barons of Vaz. Today's church dates largely from around 1500, and the interior is late Gothic in style. The art historical highlights are two magnificent late Gothic winged altars. In addition, there are paintings in the round-arched niche in the northern aisle. There, a coronation of the Virgin Mary is depicted with simple, strongly contoured figures. This work was done around 1335 by a painter whose name is unknown, but who was extremely important for the Grisons; the so-called Waltensburg Master.
