Natural Monument
UNESCO Word Heritage Site Tectonic Arena Sardona
Description
In the Tectonic Arena Sardona in the border area of cantons St. Gallen, Glarus, and Graubünden, the mountains are upside down: along a visible line, called the «Glarus thrust», old rocks were pushed over much younger rocks in the Earth's crust during the formation of the Alps. This important geological process of mountain formation is uniquely and beautifully visible at the UNESCO World Heritage site. In addition to the high density of valuable testimonies to geological history, natural landscapes with diverse flora and fauna, as well as upland moors and alluvial plains of national importance await visitors to the World Heritage site.
