Dr. Axel Flierl was born in Nuremberg (Bavaria) in 1976 and grew up in the Allgäu region. He studied concert organ, concert organ improvisation and Catholic church music in Munich and Paris (F) as well as musicology in Karlsruhe. Influential teachers were Prof. Edgar Krapp, Prof. Thierry Escaich and Vincent Warnier.
He completed his decades-long preoccupation with the work and person of the German composer Karl Höller (1907–1987) with a dissertation on Höller's organ works in Karlsruhe under Prof. Dr. Thomas Seedorf, a hitherto unexplored chapter of German music history. Axel Flierl is considered a leading researcher on Karl Höller and an interpreter of his organ works in particular.

In 2006 he was appointed main organist and conductor at the papal basilica minor of St. Peter in Dillingen on the Danube (Bavaria), the co-cathedral and second cathedral church of the Diocese of Augsburg, and has made this position a church music centre with an impact far beyond the borders of the region. In 2007, he founded the international organ festival Dillinger Basilica Concerts around the large Sandtner organ and also performed the complete organ works of Karl Höller and Maurice Duruflé (1902–1986).

Since 2022, he has also held a visiting professorship at the Pontificio Istituto di Musica sacra, the Pontifical Academy of Music in Rome.

Concerts as an organ soloist and as a lecturer at master classes regularly take him to the leading organ centres in Australia, Hong Kong, the United States, Russia, Abkhazia, Kazakhstan, South America, South Africa, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Iceland, Andorra and almost all European countries.

He also made a name for himself artistically with radio and television recordings, several CD recordings and as an author.
