LG NATUR #1: Thomas Knüsel – Throwback Environment

Thomas Knüsel (Zurich) combines a wide variety of media such as computer programs, objects, film, photography and drawing into installations. In his artistic practice, he explores and questions the interfaces between technology, materiality and perception, science and art. In doing so, he develops systems with model character that trigger new approaches to thinking precisely because they lose their explanatory function.

Throwback Environment (2022, ongoing) is a post-photographic experimental set-up that combines image and language as well as a natural and a technical-media environment. Using a camera, machine vision algorithms and a laser robot, a feedback loop is created. The laser writes the algorithmically generated image description back into the landscape. Both are in turn recorded by long-term recordings of a second camera. The picture describes itself. This fusion creates a simplistic and ironic tautology: the image confirms its own description and at the same time reduces itself to individual motifs that are accessible to artificial intelligence.
