Why the child cooks in the polenta

Aglaja Veteranyi (*1962) comes from a Romanian family of circus artists. In 1967, the family migrated from Romania to Switzerland. In Zurich, Aglaja Veteranyi (*2002) acquired the written and spoken German language and completed acting training in Zurich. Nino Haratishvili (*1983) comes from Georgia and came to Germany with her mother during the Georgian civil war. Later she moved back to Tbilisi and founded a German-Georgian theatre group. Today she is an award-winning novelist and theatre director and lives in Germany. Her great family epic "The Eighth Life (For Brilka)", translated into 25 languages, became a worldwide bestseller, and a major international film adaptation is in preparation.

In the guest performance of the Landestheater Marburg, the voices of the two women merge into a theatrical experience. Aglaja Veteranyi's novel "Why the Child Cooks in Polenta" shows the life of a family of artists from the perspective of a child. Every day, the troupe performs a tightrope act full of merciless hope for a different future. In a world in which bodies count, illusion and appearance are inscribed and hope is great. Life seems to be a perpetual stranger and on the move that has shaped the young woman. Nino Haratischwili has composed a polyphonic theatre evening with a bilingual ensemble from this story. On an opulent revolving stage, the production moves between dream and reality, splendour and softened earth, between childhood and adulthood.
